Mimosaf

by Flavia Pinheiro

Mimosa is an ongoing research project in companionship with the Mimosa pudica plant, reflecting on the violence of representing nature as a feminine, domesticated space. In a series of experiments taking shape across different media, Pinheiro explores how the concept of ‘nature’ is violently entangled with ideologies of race and gender.

The Mimosa pudica plant is known for its rapid movement in reaction to touch: after being displaced and captured in greenhouses across Europe, the plant bent over in response to touch, playing dead. They learnt that the disturbance had no real damaging consequence. Starting from this fact, this project engage different practices of remembering, learning and forgetting through touch encored in the mimosa experiences.

Mimosa is a performance that explores nature as an undomesticated, disobedient ground that refuses to be silent, passive, a resource, or an abject matter.

Must we play dead to survive? How should we respond to touch?
